In Berlin, football makes many a heart beat faster, whether they’re watching it in person in the stadium, cheering with the crowds in the festival-like fan mile, or watching the match in one of the city’s many cafés and bars. The German capital has celebrated many great football festivals in the past: the FIFA Men’s World Cup in 2006, the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2011, the UEFA Champions League final 2015 and welcoming the German national team and 2014 World Cup winners to the Brandenburg Gate.
In 2006, Berlin showed the world just how cosmopolitan and likeable the city’s people are and the “summer fairy tale” was born as the world came to Berlin to join the World Cup party. The fan mile broke all audience records and images of the an entire city partying were seen around the world. In 2014, football euphoria peaked once again in the German capital as the world champion German national team was officially welcomed home on 15 July 2014. More than one million people lined the fan mile and the streets of Berlin were turned into a massive World Cup victory celebration.
Berlin is absolutely mad for football! Whether you have a ticket to the match or not, coming to Berlin during the DFB Cup final, a league match with Hertha BSC or 1. FC Union Berlin, and the viewing parties for the World Cup and European Championships is always an experience to remember.
